An Enlightened "Salon Party"

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

The Age of Enlightenment (also known as the “Age of Reason”) was a period in history when intellectuals in late 17th and 18th-century Europe began emphasising the importance of reason and individualism over a sole reliance on tradition and faith. Its mission was to use reason to reform society, challenge ideas based on tradition and faith, and advance knowledge through the scientific method.

The Enlightenment was a philosophical revolution. It encouraged scientific thinking, scepticism, and intellectual exchange. This new way of thinking about rational thought stated that one should start with clearly stated principles, use correct logic to reach conclusions, test the conclusions against evidence, and then revise the principles in light of the evidence. Thus, Enlightenment thinkers fought against superstition and intolerance. As America was colonised, the ideas of the Enlightenment spread and had a significant impact on culture, politics, and government.

Grade 8 students were asked to work in pairs and explore enlightenment thinkers by planning a dinner party. Students were provided with the guest lists and were encouraged to have fun, be creative, and remember to be purposeful in their choices - all of these would represent the age of Enlightenment. I was delighted with the ideas my students cater while doing this activity.
