An Industrial Revolution Shark Tank

As they recreated the popular television show Shark Tank, Grade 8 History class consumed a flurry of historical knowledge.

The students travelled back in time to the early days of Industrial Revolution in the 19th century and became the innovators behind some of the greatest inventions. Students chose an invention, crafted a sales pitch, and presented to a panel of judges.

I as a facilitator provided some context for the lesson and elaborated on the idea and designed a lesson I believed would empower and engage the class.

The students were required to conduct extensive research on the product and know everything about it. They required information regarding government involvement, patent rights, business opportunities, and prices. In addition to conducting research on the inventions, the judges developed challenging questions for each group based on their findings.

Students described their chosen inventions to the class using PowerPoint slides, iMovies, posters, diagrams, and even models. As an educator I always seek to empower and engage students in the learning process, such student-generated concepts are my major focus.
