Digital Storytelling: Putting Students’ Zest for Technology to Good Use

Digital storytelling is a multimedia approach to sharing a narrative. Creators combine video, photography, sound, text, music and a narrative voice to share their stories in a digital media format. In the classroom, students create digital stories in collaborative groups, taking on different roles such as the writer, director, editor and narrator.


Digital storytelling helps students build important 21st-century communication skills and make personal connections to the content they are learning. Digital storytelling engages students in deep thinking and helps them become powerful communicators. When digital stories are published online, students have the opportunity to share their work with their peers and gain valuable experience in critiquing their own and other students’ work, which can promote gains in emotional intelligence and social learning. Digital Storytelling appeals to students with diverse learning styles also foster collaboration when students are able to work in groups, and provides value in enhancing the student experience through personal ownership and accomplishment.
