Edible Modeling - Plate Boundaries

Divergent, Convergent, and Transform!

Grade 8 students learned how Earth’s tectonic plates interacted in this delicious activity. This quick and tasty experiment gave these little scientists a hands-on way to explore plate tectonics – the movement of the Earth’s crust that leads to the formation of volcanoes, mountains, and oceanic trenches. They modelled the plates’ movements using cream biscuits to understand how Earth’s landscape can change over time. Students used biscuits, frosting, water and plate for edible modelling of plate boundaries. There were 4 parts to this activity and each supported by many questions. As and when they proceeded with each procedure they listed their finding simultaneously.

Part 1 - Part 1: Divergent Plate Boundaries

Part 2: Convergent Plate Boundaries (Oceanic & Continental –> Subduction)

Part 3: Convergent Plate Boundaries (Continental –> Mountains)

Part 4: Transform Plate Boundaries (Sliding)
