Hands on History – An Archaeologist for a Day

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

What does a day in the life of an archaeologist look like? Well, the Grade 6 students walked into the shoes of an archaeologist for a day and do several activities like ‘History Hunting’, 'Interpreting Discoveries' and 'Building a Time Capsule'. They willingly involved their family members in doing so.

Grade 6 begun by performing some hands-on historical research by hunting the oldest, the most interesting and the newest object in their house. They then explained and analysed those objects. Next, they imagined how historians and archaeologists interpret their discoveries by choosing one object and describing it as something that it isn’t. They had the freedom of being wildly wrong here to have fun and also ask family members to decipher the same. Lastly, they preserved historical evidence for the future by building a time capsule. They left the evidence of their own History for the future by burying or hiding a container filled with family member’s favourite objects and a letter with information that can prove useful for a future Historian.
