Illustrating the Layers of the Earth through Egg Dissection

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

The Earth is split into three layers: the crust, the mantle, and the core. The mantle and the core are further subdivided into an inner and outer layer.

To learn the structure of the Earth, Grade 8 students boiled eggs that model the 3 layers of the Earth. The inside of the earth is layered something like an egg as both have a thin, brittle shell. The crust of the Earth is broken into pieces, like the cracked shell of a hard-boiled egg. The mantle of the Earth is like the egg white, and the core of the earth lies in the centre like an egg yolk. Followed by this activity they drew a diagram of the Earth’s interiors and labelled all the parts.
