Mapping an Autobiography

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

I started my Grade 6 Geography lesson this year getting acquainted with my students. Grade 6 is a shift from upper primary to middle school for them and I wanted to set the scene of inquiry, curiosity and fun since the beginning and what’s best than an “Autobiography Map”. Creating a whole new place from imagination is way harder than it look and therefore they were provided some questions regarding their likes, dislikes, activities that represent them and goal they have for their future. The questionnaire helped them for initial brainstorming.

The students incorporated 10 of the brainstormed items into their map, representing them with different land features or locations on the map. After their symbolic representations were added they also considered unique compasses and added keys to elucidate their different land features. Watercolor paints, crayons, and colored pencils were used to make the maps look colorful and labels were added too. The final products were both personal and scenic representations of each individual student.
