A one-word challenge requires choosing a particular word to lead learners throughout the year as they make choices, pursue aims, and try to become the human being they want to be. Its part compass, part motivator, and part mirror. Adopting a guiding word can encourage them to:
Direct on purposes
Direct observation
Make judgments that align with purposes
Deny arrangements that will drive them away from their intentions
Eliminate diversions that arise in the life
Discover the route they need to take to reach the ends
Design one’s thinking and mindset
Model behaviours
Evaluate the circumstance
Modify one’s performance
A one-word challenge doesn’t have to be the only thing set at New Year’s, of course. If one prefer goal setting, they can use one word to shape the distinct aims they are proposing. Or, one can simply choose a word and let that shape their everyday choices.
I had an opportunity to implement the challenge with my secondary students. I had asked them that instead of thinking of a “resolution” choose a word as a focus and a motivator for the year 2021. Brainstorm, select and turn that word into an art piece. That could either sketch, painted or a digital logo!
