Planet Size Comparison through 3D Modeling: Recycle & Create/Planet Platter

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

From the ringed beauty of Saturn to the massive hulk of Jupiter, to the lead-melting temperatures on Venus, each planet in our solar system is unique — with its environment and own story to tell about the history of our Solar System. What also is amazing is the sheer size difference of planets. While humans think of Earth as a large planet, in reality, it is dwarfed by the massive gas giants lurking at the outer edges of our Solar System.

Grade 6 Geography students were challenged to create a model of the solar system using plastic bottle caps, recycled item, fruits and vegetables. They were also asked to analyse planetary sizes using those models. This activity reinforced concepts students have encountered in terms of scale and distance and how models assisted them in understanding. These also supported students to grasp the various sizes of planets in our Solar System using mostly fruit, with some other items.
