The 1936 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XI Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event held in 1936 in Berlin, Germany. Berlin won the bid to host the Games over Barcelona, Spain, on 26 April 1931, at the 29th IOC Session in Barcelona. The Berlin Games were the 10th occurrence of the modern Olympic Games. They were held in a tense, politically charged atmosphere. The Nazi Party had risen to power in 1933, two years after Berlin was awarded the Games, and its racist policies led to the international debate about a boycott of the Games. The Berlin Games became a powerful propaganda tool for Nazi Germany as it tried to make its brutal treatment of Jews, political opponents, and others seem benign. The Nazi Olympics also helped Germany cultivate an atmosphere of appeasement from the rest of the world as Hitler prepared for conquest and war.

The IGCSE History students were asked to research the event and find out where and when it was held, and what sports were included. Secondly, decide which sport interests them. Thirdly research the sport at the 1936 Olympics. Fourthly research the history of the awarding of the games and how they were hosted. What made this Olympics extra special? Finally, create a specialist magazine front-page article about your chosen sport and the 1936 Summer Olympics using all their research from above.
