Teaching 'The Spirit of an Age' through Arts

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

As a History facilitator, one of the goals is to make my students understand the relevance of the past in the present day. As learners, they are primed to develop their cognitive abilities and to view people and events from the past from multiple perspectives, and I am there to assist them to personalize the impersonal through my teaching. The integration of the arts and history presents an opportunity for the learner to examine the lives of their counterparts from past eras, as they begin to build their own relationship with the historical past. Art is an important and perhaps unexpected tool in teaching history. Photos, drawings, and paintings can communicate an abundance of information about historical events.

The Scientific Revolution period in History was when developments in mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology including human anatomy, and chemistry transformed the views of society about nature. Grade 8 History students depicted the ideas of the scientists through artwork!
